The video game industry is far bigger than most people think, and demands within the
industry have grown exponentially within the last few years. Even if events are streamed online
instead of at a venue, these events are still a great place for like minded gamers to gather,
discuss, and enjoy. Within the past month, big events such as the Sony livestream and the
multitude of Nintendo Directs have provided more than enough content to keep the entirety of
the community on its toes.
In the Sony livestream, a plethora of new games have been announced, such as God of
War: Ragnarok, Wolverine, and Spider-man 2, to name a few. The anticipation for these
next-gen, era defining games is palpable. God of War follows the life and journey of Kratos, a
Spartan, as he ascends to godhood. In Ragnarok, we will get a view at Kratos’ deepening
relationship with his son, and how they will work together to avoid the coming of Ragnarok.
Wolverine is diving into a new form of video game. Within the livestream, all the viewers were
able to see was the image of a rather hairy arm resting on the table of a bar. However, that’s all it
took to get viewers riled up for the video game debut of this classic Marvel superhero. In
contrast, Spider-man games are nothing new. The first Spider-man game on PS4 and Spider-man:
Miles Morales on PS5 were both very well received by the public. These two heroes will be
working together in the new game, and results look promising.
Nintendo Directs are an opportunity to showcase new titles arriving under the well
known brand, and there have been no disappointments as of late. For example, Shin Megami
Tensei V, the fifth installment in the highly acclaimed JRPG series, is set to release in November.
As of yet, not much has been revealed about the title, but it’s sure to more than live up to
expectations. The final fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has also been announced. Over
the span of two separately purchasable sets of characters, the 89th fighter has been revealed to be
Sora. Sora comes from Kingdom Hearts, a very popular series of games featuring Disney
characters such as Donald and Goofy as characters within. This marks the end of the game’s
updates, and it also marks the end of Director Masahiro Sakurai’s career. This game director has
been known for constantly pumping out game-changing titles, but he said he’ll be looking
forward to his retirement.
This year has been spectacular for the gaming industry. Graphics within games are
becoming more and more realistic, and throwbacks to early game culture have become
widespread as well. Independent game developers are trying their hand at making games, and
those games are being well received by the public as well. At this point in time, the industry is
growing at such a rapid rate that there’s surely a game for everyone in this world, from
educational to pure carnage, from stress relieving to heart pounding, and from wit to combat.
